NAOMI GILON – HARD SKIN

From 15 September to 21 October 2022

Candy Snake Gallery

Candy Snake Gallery presents Hard Skin a solo show by Naomi Gilon. Inspired by the world of tattooing and the delicacy of porcelain, the project combines different sculptures in which shapes between human and animal meet designs made by tattoo artists, positioned on the porcelain surface as if it were a skin.

Belgian artist born in 1996 in Arlon and based in Brussels, Naomi Gilon is one of the most interesting artists of an emerging international scene increasingly open to the contamination between visual art, fashion and design. Focused on the idea of transformation of the body as a tool for the construction of social identity and on the experimental use of ceramics as a material that is both fragile and sensual, Naomi Gilon's research is in constant dialogue with the forms of popular culture, from the traditional ones of classical mythology to the most contemporary expressions of youth subcultures.

Among the collaborations developed by Naomi Gilon in recent years, we can mention the fashion brands Marc Jacobs, with whom she has reinvented some iconic bags of the American fashion brand, and Han Kjøbenhavn, with whom she created a dress that became viral after being was worn by actress Julia Fox at the Oscars party.

The reference imagery is linked to the human-animal hybridization typical of fantastic fiction, from speculative literature to horror cinema, in which the encounter of the human body with wild nature represents the recovery of underground energies linked to the collective unconscious. In particular, the shapes of the hands or feet that turn into paws with claws are typical of Naomi Gilon, an expression of an animal aggression that is symbolically reintegrated and tamed until it becomes attractive due to the sinuous shapes and captivating colors. thus obtaining a new harmony between civilization and instinct that passes through the sensuality of matter.

In Naomi Gilon's works, gothic imagery meets post-internet fluidity in an ironic mash-up in which the fantastic dimension enters everyday life also through everyday objects such as bags, vases, candlesticks, plates and cups, approaching design but preserving the uniqueness of the unique piece.

Among the main exhibitions he has exhibited at: Galerie Fleur & Wouter (Amsterdam, Netherlands), Cdlt + Gallery (Liége, Belgium), Kunsthal Gent (Gent, Belgium), Superchief Gallery (New York, USA), Les Galeries Louise (Brussels, Belgium) , Subsidiary Projects (London, United Kingdom), Kingsgate Project Space (London, United Kingdom), Alice Gallery (Brussels, Belgium), Normaal Gallery (Brussels, Belgium), Diesel Project Space (Gent, Belgium), BAM (Mons, Belgium ), Like A Little Disaster (Polignano a Mare, Italy), Pavillon Baltard (Paris, France), Les Halles Saint Géry (Brussels, Belgium).
